PROJECT TITLE: NIREUS - Environmental Protection for the Small Island Developing States
COUNTRIES: Trinidad and Tobago, Fiji and Mauritius
OVERALL OBJECTIVE: To support the small island states in designing environmental protection strategies that would contribute to their sustainable political and economic development and therefore to the improvement of the quality of life of its citizens.
The specific aims of NIREUS project were the following:
- Answering the need of further education of the SIS jurists on environmental protection issues;
- Answering the need of creating a legal basis and planning the appropriate regulations in the SIS through expert missions;
- Familiarization of the trainees with the principles of sustainable development;
- Assimilation of the acquis communautaire by the jurists of the Small Island States;
- Support of the necessary legislation reforms towards the aforementioned direction.
ACTIVITIES:
The project included the following activities:
- Training seminars delivered by experts on the Greek and European standards for environmental protectionfor selected jurists in the three geographical circles (Atlantic, Indian, Pacific);
- the provision of legal assistance by European experts to authorities and institutions of the 43 small island states and the organization of a series of seminars in Athens with the presence of representatives of the governments of the small island states and public servants specializing in environmental issues;
- A one-week study visit to Greece during which jurists and representatives of the governments of the small island states participated in seminars given by prominent experts;
- A scholarship for study and research in Greece awarded to three jurists from the small island states.
