Workshop within the Framework of the NIREUS Project

The EPLO, in collaboration with the University of Mauritius, member of the Consortium of Small Island States (U.C.S.I.S.), organized a workshop entitled “Implementation of International Environmental Law: Best Practices of Europe” on 22-24 October 2007, within the framework of the Project “NIREUS – Environmental Protection for the Small Island Developing States”. The event took place at the premises of the University of Mauritius.

The speakers in this event included representatives from the European Public Law Organization, the Ministry of Environment of Mauritius, (National Development Unit) and the State Law Office of Mauritius, as well as the University of Mauritius. From the European side, Dr. Eleftherios Levantis, Dr. Christoforos Petrou and Dr. Yannis Tzortzis represented the EPLO.

The audience consisted mainly of representatives of the Ministry of Environment and National Development Unit, the Ministry of Agro-Industry, the State Law Office, Lawyers, Judges, the President of the Environment Appeal Tribunal and Mauritian Environmental NGOs.

The following issues were discussed during the workshop:

  • International -European Environmental Law framework
  • Evolution of Environmental Law in Mauritius 
  • Barriers to compliance with Multilateral Environmental Agreements: the case of Mauritius
  • Integrated Coastal Zone Management-Best Practices in Europe
  • Marine oil pollution: Legal issues
  • The Hellenic legal framework as regards waste and environmental issues of the Greek islands
  • Institutional tools of flexibility, efficiency and transparency in a representative sustainable development or Access to environmental justice
  • The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and its application in Europe
  • Legal challenges in European climate policy
  • European environmental legal framework: Between flexibility and new modes of regulation
  • Public interest litigation & Environment protection

Dr. E. Levantis, EPLO Head of the Environmental Unit, represented the EPLO in the aforementioned workshop.
