3rd webinar on the "Silent Spring in inverse" by the ΙSD Institute and Dianeosis

The EPLO Institute for Sustainable Development of the European Public Law Organization (EPLO) and the diaNEOsis Research and Policy Institute organized the 3rd online roundtable discussion on: "The silent spring in inverse: Can the imposed quiet over human activities and the comeback of nature teach us something for the future?".

The 3rd online roundtable discussion took place on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at 19:00 (Athens time).

Speakers:

  • Aris Vrettos, Director, Centre for Business Transformation, CISL (Cambridge University Institute for Sustainability Leadership)
  •  Sebastien Treyer, Executive Director, IDDRI (Institut du Developpement Durable et des Relations Internationales, Paris)

Μoderator: Spyros Kouvelis, EPLO/ISD Director

Commentator: Thodoris Georgakopoulos, Editorial Director of diaNEOsis

Discussion Points:

  • What will this mean for the environment and specifically for climate change and emissions, for wildlife, for resources state and use, what are the positive and negative side effects?
  • How we should document this unexpected situation in modern history?
  • What lessons can we draw for future action in terms of rewiring our economy, rethinking lifestyles, and ensuring that recovery takes place with sustainability values at the core?

"Contrary to the 1962 book by Rachel Carson (*), this time it was the sounds of nature that dominated the landscape around cities in the world during covid-19 lockdowns, as human activities have been brought to a bare minimum. Effects on the environment of cities and on the presence of wildlife started to become visible already after the first weeks of confinement, and became more so as weeks went by. This was an unprecedented case of a global environmental experiment, that can provide precious data and knowledge on the effects of human activity, and lead to the building of significant knowledge and lessons for future behaviours after the pandemic has ended".
