On 20 April 2012, the EPLO Director, Prof. Spyridon Flogaitis, traveled to Slovakia to inaugurate the new EPLO Regional Office in the royal town of Skalica, hosted in the Skalica City Hall, the first Office of the Organization in Central Europe.
The EPLO has been present in Skalica since May 2011, when the University of Central Europe in Skalica became the 52nd University/Institution to join the EPLO Board of Directors. In September 2011, the EPLO Director visited the University to deliver an address at the opening ceremony for the 2011-2012 academic year and during that visit it was decided that a Regional Office would be established within the premises of the City Hall. In late 2011, the Student Club of the EPLO Friends in Skalica was launched.
At the inauguration ceremony, the Mayor of Skalica, Dr. h. c. Stanislav Chovanec, the Director and Founder of the University of Central Europe in Skalica, Ing. Heidy Schwarczová, as well as the EPLO Director gave speeches, before a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the EPLO and the University of Central Europe in Skalica. The MoU foresees cooperation between the two parties on various activities, and provisions for the operation of the Regional Office among other.
The former President of Slovakia, Mr. Rudolf Schuster, was present at the event, along with the Ambassador of Greece to Slovakia, Mr. Nikos Kanellos, the Ambassador of Cyprus to Slovakia Mr. Marios S. Kountourides, the Ambassador of Georgia to Slovakia, Mr. Alexander Nalbandov, the Ambassador of Finland to Slovakia, Mr. Jukka Leino, as well as the General Consul of Croatia to Slovakia, Mrs. Ivana Juric-Antolic.
