Event on Transparency and Audit as fundamental elements of democracy

An event titled "Audit and Transparency, Fundamental Elements of Democracy" that was co - organized by the Academy for Transparency & Human Rights, the Institute for Local Governance & Policy Innovation of EPLO and the Institute of Internal Auditors of Greece with the institutional support of the Inspectors-Controllers Body for Public Administration was successfully held on Wednesday May 30th 2018 at the EPLO conference hall in Plaka, widely attended.

Best practices on the promotion of transparency and public integrity as well as tools for the prevention of corruption were presented and views were exchanged, while the participants were commited to highlight the importance of transparency and the various forms of auditing for improving the quality of governance, the trust building in public institutions and the empowerment of democracy.

The Director of EPLO Professor Spyridon Flogaitis, in his opening speech, emphasized upon the vital importance of establishing a culture of transparency in the public and private sector.

Greeting speeches were made by the Minister for Justice,Transparency and Human Rights,mr Stayros Kontonis, the Minister of State for the Coordination of the Government work mr.Christoforos Vernardakis and by the MP (Kavala region), responsible for the section of Justice, Transparency and Human Rights, representing the leader of the opposition, mr. Nikos Panagiotopoulos.

The speakers of the event were the Vice –President of the Supreme Court of Audit, ms Georgia Maragou, the President of the Hellenic Union of Municipalities of Greece and Mayor of Ammaroussion, mr Giorgos Patoulis,the Special Secretary of the Body of Inspectors- Controllers for Public Administration, Professor of Law mr Dimosthenis Kassavetis,the Deputy Chairman of the Regional Administration of Sterea Ellada mr Efthimios Karaiskos,the President of Transparency International Greece, Dr. Anna Damaskou, the President of the Institute of Internal Auditors Greece, ms Vera Marmalidou, the Head of Corporate Governance, KPMG partner, mr Giorgos Raounas and the managing director of PPS, mr. Giorgos Pelekanakis.

The event was moderated by mr Ioannis Selimis, Public Administration Inspector-Controller.
