The European Public Law Organization (EPLO) successfully hosted and supported the 3rd Sub-regional Meeting on Environmental Assessments in a Transboundary Context in the Mediterranean Sea, held on 23–24 April 2026 in Athens.
Organized within the framework of the UNECE Espoo Convention in collaboration with the UNEP/MAP – Barcelona Convention Secretariat and the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy, the meeting brought together delegations from 27 countries, as well as distinguished experts and representatives of international organizations and IFIs from across the world.
The event took place at EPLO's premises in the historic area of Plaka, Athens, home to the Organization's Circular Economy, Environment, Energy and Climate Institute, which played an active role in supporting the organization and implementation of the meeting.
Over the course of the two days, participants engaged in substantive discussions on strengthening cooperation and promoting the effective implementation of transboundary Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) procedures. The meeting also provided a platform to exchange best practices, address common challenges, and explore opportunities for enhanced collaboration among countries, regional frameworks, and international institutions.
Building on previous sub-regional meetings, the event further contributed to reinforcing synergies between the Espoo Convention and the Barcelona Convention systems, while facilitating dialogue and networking among national focal points and key stakeholders.
EPLO's active involvement reflects its continued commitment to fostering international dialogue and advancing policy development in the fields of environmental protection, circular economy, energy, and climate. Through the work of its specialized Institute, EPLO remains dedicated to supporting sustainable solutions and regional cooperation in the Mediterranean and beyond.
