Governance and Sustainability in COVID-19 times

The EPLO Institute for Sustainable Development and the diaNEOsis Research and Policy Institute organize a series of online roundtable discussions on governance for social and environmental sustainability and the effects, expectations, and things to consider for the day after the COVID-19 period. As an unprecedented number of governance and socio-economic issues are emerging, with direct effects on the use and distribution of natural and economic resources, thereby impacting the sustainability performance of humans and society globally, the EPLO Institute for Sustainable Development and the diaNEOsis Research and Policy Institute aspire to contribute to this dialogue.

All roundtables will be held in English, and will have a duration of 45 minutes, allowing for comments and questions by the audience.

The first one, entitled Loud Governments - Quiet Social Partners: What can be the role of Social Stakeholders and Civil Society during and after COVID-19? took place on Thursday, April 16th at 5pm Athens time.

Speakers:

  • Mario Pezzini, Director of the OECD Development Centre
  • Andrea Renda, Senior Research Fellow and Head of Global Governance, Regulation, Innovation & Digital Economy of CEPS
  • Christos Alefantis , Editor in Chief of Shedia magazine

Moderator: Spyros Kouvelis, EPLO Institute for Sustainable Development Director

Commentator: Thodoris Georgakopoulos, Editorial Director of diaNEOsis

The date and time of the following online discussions will be announced shortly and their themes are as follows:

  • Economic Recovery vs SDGs – for or against each other? Will the Sustainable Development principles and objectives lead to better economic recovery, or will the need for quick action render Sustainable Development obsolete?
  • After the social glacier: How practices such as social distancing and remote communication and work will shape human societies and the role of technology?
  • The silent spring in inverse: Can the imposed quiet over human activities and the comeback of nature teach us something for the future?
