Conference on Migration and Refugee flows in Greece: Rights, Challenges, Prospects

The Alien and Immigration Law Association (EDAM), the Hellenic Association of Political Scientists (Ε.Ο.Π.Ε. - H.A.P.Sc.) and the Academy of Transparency and Human Rights (ATHR) of the EPLO, organized on Friday 22 April 2016 at the Cultural Center of Athens, auditorium «ANTONIS TRITSIS», at 10 p.m., a conference on “Migration and Refugee flows: Rights, Challenges, Prospects”.

Welcome speeches were made by Mr. Thomas Kamenopoulos, Vice President of the Athens Bar Association and Mr. Antonis Avgerinos, President of the Hellenic Red Cross. The opening of the conference was made by Ms. Aggeliki Papapanagiotou Judge of Appeal, Member of the Academic Board of the Academy of Transparency and Human Rights - EPLO, Ms. Chrysoula Marinakis, Lawyer and President of EDAM and Mr. Symeon Sidiropoulos, Political Scientist, President of Ε.Ο.Π.Ε.

The first session included opening speeches moderated by Ms Christina Tsagkli, Lawyer and Secretary General of the Athens Bar Association (ABA). 

Speakers included: Dr. Theodoros Papatheodorou, Professor at the University of Peloponnese and MP of Achaia, Dr. Aggelos Syrigos, Assistant Professor of International Law and Foreign Policy at Panteion University, Dr. Markos Papakostantis, Lawyer - European Law (Office of the Deputy Minister of Immigration Policy), Mr. Efstathios Poularakis, Lawyer and Vice President of EDAM –Editor in Chief in Migration Law and Dr. Vasilis Alevizakos, Political Scientist and Head of the Scientific Committee of H.A.P.Sc.

The second session on "Actions of Government Bodies and International Organizations" was moderated by Dr. Iordanis Psimmenos, Sociologist, Professor and Chairman of the Social Policy Department at Panteion University. 

Speakers included: Mr. Chris Kapatai, Deputy Regional Governor of Attica, Mr. Lefteris Papayannakis, Deputy Mayor of the City of Athens - Sector for Refugees and Immigrants, Mr. Chris Poulianitis, Brigadier –Hellenic General Staff of Defense, Ms. Catherine Poulaki, Legal Advisor of the Minister of Defense, Mr. Daniel Esdras, International Organization for Migration.

The third session on “Volunteer-Integration Issues Networks” was moderated by Mr. Panagiotis Perakis, Member of the Board of Directors of the Athens Bar Association, Chairman of the Committe "Access to Justice of the CCBE" and Head of the Commission for Refugee Issues and Migrants of the Plenary of the Hellenic Bar Associations. 

Speakers included: Mr. Ioannis F. Ioannidis, Lawyer and Member of the Commission on issues of Refugees and Migrants, Mr. Nikitas Kanakis, President of Doctors of the World, Mrs. Zefi Thanassoula, Section Head for Social Welfare of the Hellenic Red Cross, Ms. Dora Vangi, representative for Generation 2.0 for Rights, Equality & Diversity (Generation 2.0 RED) and Dr. Theodoros Fouskas, Sociologist Ph.D. at Panteion University and Deputy Head of the Scientific Committee of H.A.P.Sc.

The fourth session on “Recent Legislative Developments and Asylum Issues” was moderated by Ms. Irene Giannadakis, President of Judges of Appeal and President of the Association of Administrative Judges. 

Speakers included: Mr. Vasilis Faitas, President of the Judges of the First Instance Court and Secretary General of the Association of Administrative Judges, Ms. Antigone-Maria Spyropoulos, Lawyer, LLM Criminal Law and Member of EDAM, Ms. Sasha Papadimitropoulou, Lawyer, Panteion University and Member EDAM, Ms. Katerina Tsalagka, Expert of the Appeal Authority of the Ministry of Interior and Mr. Alexander Constantine, Lawyer and Legal Advisor of N.C.I.
