The two-day Conference "European Cities in crisis: from the 12th century to the present” has concluded its works successfully. The conference was organized by the Department of History and Archaeology, Faculty of Philosophy of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the European Public Law Organization (EPLO) on the occasion of the 180 years since the founding of the University in 1837.
The Conference was held on Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd of February 2017, at the EPLO premises in Plaka, Athens.
In the eight sessionsof the conference the scholars presented papers on cases of European cities in crisis during the medieval, early modern, modern and contemporary periods and discussed the urban crises in history. From the Zealot Uprising in Thessaloniki up to the bombings of London by the Nazis, from the sack of Rome in 1527 up to the experience of revolution in Barcelona during the Spanish civil war and from the French religious wars until the “violent” urbanization of Athens during the 1950s. A discussion with the audience followed each session.
