PROJECT TITLE: SHUR FP-6 - Society and Human Rights- Human Rights in Conflicts: The Role of Civil Society
COUNTRIES: Cyprus, Turkey, Bosnia Herzegovina, Israel
OVERALL OBJECTIVE: To produce a research study on the role of civil society in ethno-political conflicts and in particular with regard to Human Rights, as well as the potential complimentary link between civil society and EU Actors.
ACTIVITIES:
Four case studies in the European neighbourhood were developed:
- Bosnia and Herzegovina,
- Cyprus,
- Turkey-Kurds,
- Israel-Palestine.
The outcome envisaged by this program consists of gaining a thorough understanding of the inter-linkages that connect a conflict to Human Rights issues and to civil society.
Through the comparative examination of these cases, Shur drew-up policy guidelines tailored to governmental and non-governmental civil society action. The research was multidisciplinary, combining different perspectives including comparative politics and international relations, political theory, sociology, history, anthropology and international law. It was carried out jointly by two distinct kinds of partners: University and academic research centers, and activists and NGOs research centers.
