PROJECT TITLE: ROXANA II - Legal Reform in Afghanistan

COUNTRIES: Afghanistan

OVERALL OBJECTIVE: To support and contribute to the improvement of the parliamentary, as well as the judicial institutions of Afghanistan.

ACTIVITIES:

The EPLC contributed to the effective administration of the judicial institutions. That was achieved through the means of human resources rational management, the accurate information over the drafting of the budget of Courts and Tribunals, and the institutional safeguarding of the independence of the judicial authorities.

The main activities included, on the one hand, the training of a selected group of women operating in the field of law (lawyers and judges from the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, etc.) on issues regarding the functioning of the legislative system (human rights, constitutional rights, democracy, electoral rights) and, on the other hand, the organization of a study visit of the trainees to Greece, in order to allow them to network with European lawyers, judges, representatives of the Greek Parliament. The team of trainers selected by the EPLC included both international and local experts.

A series of seminars took place in Kabul on the following topics: Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a comparative study of Afghanistan and Lebanon, Gender Equality, Humanitarian Law, the political participation of women as a human right.

A final study visit in Athens was organized in order to allow further discussion and exchange of views, but also to disseminate the results of the project.
