PROJECT TITLE: AVICENNE - Support to Algerian NGOs Promoting Human Rights and Democracy and to Algerian Civil Society

OVERALL OBJECTIVE: To raise the Algerian civil society’s awareness on its fundamental rights and freedoms with a particular focus on disadvantaged groups, especially women and children.
ACTIVITIES:
Project activities included:
- Supporting Algerian NGOs as well as jurists, academics, civil servants, students and members of the civil society who are engaged in the promotion of human rights in the Algerian civil society and need to rapidly acquire the necessary skills to fight human rights abuses;
- Creating a documentation center in Algiers, which contains books, brochures, journals and Internet access dealing with Human Rights issues;
- Three 3-day seminars, consisting of lectures and workshops, organized in Algiers and in the province town of Tizi-Ouzou. The first seminar on violence against women was held from the 14th to the 16th of December 2005 in Algiers and the second seminar took place in Tizi-Ouzou on “The international framework for the promotion and the protection of children’s rights” from the 1st to the 2nd of June 2006.
