Giuliano Amato, former Prime Minister of Italy and a well-known philhellene, restated his belief that Greece must remain in eurozone in the framework of his visit to Athens on 12 and 13 September.

Specifically, Amato met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dimitris Avramopoulos, and discussed on the similar problems faced by the neighboring countries, as well as the need for reform in public administration. Moreover, the two parties agreed on a common European perspective for the two countries, of which the former Prime Minister is a fervent supporter.

What is more, his recent statement in the newspaper of Rome "Il Messaggero" is characteristic of his stance: "if Greece exits the euro, the next could be us because the eurozone is like an artichoke. Sooner or later the leaves may be cut off." He emphasized his stance stating: "I was always utterly opposed to the idea favoring that the weaker should be first removed before the issues are set on the table. This course turns eurozone into the typical artichoke."
His meetings with the Minister of Education, Religion, Culture and Sports, Konstantinos Arvanitopoulos, and the Minister of Administrative Reform and Electronic Governance, Antonis Manitakis were of the same character.

On Thursday 13 September, Amato –representing the Italian Republic-, participated in the annual meeting of the Board of Directors of the European Public Law Organization (EPLO), during which the developments and activities of the Organization were commented upon, while its upcoming targets were announced. Special attention was drawn to the participation of new Universities in the Board of Directors of the Organization (EPLO), among which is the European University Cyprus.
