The EPLC organized a study visit of Romanian delegates in Athens, Greece, from 6 to 10 April 2009, within the framework of the Romania Twinning Project “Improving the Institutional Capacity of the Agencies Involved in the Prevention of Trafficking in Human Beings in line with the Current European Standards and Best Practices”.
The delegation consisted of Ms. Baerbel Uhl, Resident Twinning Adviser and member of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights, Austria, and five representatives of the Romanian National Agency against Trafficking in Persons (ANITP): Mrs. Mihaela Gheorghe, psychologist, Mrs. Marcela Marcu, social worker, Mrs. Simona Petca, psychologist, Mrs. Denisa Chetan, psychologist, and Mrs. Camelia Dinica, European Affairs expert.
The study visit aimed at acquiring an overall understanding of the National Identification and Referral Mechanism in Greece, as well as exchanging experience and best practices between Romania and Greece in the fight against human trafficking according to the EU standards.
The delegation had meetings with high-ranking officials from the Public Security Directorate, Hellenic Police, Hellenic Ministry of Interior, as well as the General Directorate for Gender Equality, Hellenic Ministry of Interior, but also from the Hellenic Ministry of Justice, the Hellenic Ministry of Health and Social Solidarity, and the Hellenic Ministry of Employment and Social Protection. The delegation also visited a number of Greek NGOs involved in supporting victims of human trafficking including Act Up, Solidarity, KLIMAKA, ARSIS and the Greek Council for Refugees.
