An open Conference on “Free Competition in the EU-The role of the national judge” took place on April 4, from 2:30 pm to 7:30 pm, at Hotel Titania, 52 Panepistimiou st., Athens.
Judges and Prosecutors from three countries namely Bulgaria, Cyprus and Greece exchanged views and experiences in enforcing free market rules in their jurisdictions. This conference has been prepared by the Judiciary for the Judiciary of the three countries concerned. It aimed at presenting the results of the inter-jurisdictional dialogue which took place within the framework of the project training programs.
The conference was opened by Ms Maria Stenioti, Secretary General of the Association of Greek Judges and Prosecutors, Mr. Dimitris Kyritsakis, Chairman of the Hellenic Competition Commission, and Prof. Spyridon Flogaitis, Director of the European Public Law Organization. It was attended by over one hundred judges, prosecutors, legal practitioners and academics.
In the first session the conference addressed the topic of Public Enforcement, while the second session dealt with the issue of Private Enforcement of EU Competition Law in the three jurisdictions. More particularly, the second session focused on the conditions and requirements for the introduction of the EU Directive «Damages» into the domestic legal orders of Bulgaria, Cyprus and Greece.
The Conference was organized as part of the 14-month project “Training of National Judges in Bulgaria, Cyprus and Greece on Enforcement of EU Competition Law”, funded by the European Commission - Directorate-General for Competition, and implemented by EPLO in partnership with the Human Resource Development and Innovation Center, the Center for Continuing Education at the Law Faculty of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, the Institute of Studies in Competition Law and Policy (IMEDIPA), the Hellenic Competition Commission and the Association of Greek Judges and Prosecutors.
