The European Public Law Organization (EPLO) participated in the United Nations International Law Week 2026, held at UN Headquarters in New York from 26 to 30 October, with the attendance of the EPLO Director and Legal Advisor.
As part of the week's proceedings, EPLO representatives followed the work of the Sixth Committee (Legal) of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, the principal forum for the consideration of legal questions within the United Nations system.
A key highlight of the programme was the Committee's consideration of the reports of the International Law Commission (ILC), the UN body entrusted with the progressive development and codification of international law. The Commission's Chair, Andreas D. Mavroyiannis, who also presides over EPLO's Global Rule of Law Commission, presented the ILC's recent work and ongoing efforts to address some of the most significant legal challenges facing the international community.
The discussions focused on a number of topics at the forefront of contemporary international law, including the immunity of State officials from foreign criminal jurisdiction, the identification and application of general principles of law, and mechanisms for resolving disputes involving international organizations. These issues lie at the heart of ongoing efforts to strengthen international cooperation and ensure greater legal certainty in international relations.
EPLO's participation in International Law Week reflects the Organization's longstanding commitment to promoting international law, multilateral dialogue, and the rule of law. By engaging with the work of the United Nations and the International Law Commission, EPLO continues to contribute to discussions shaping the future development of the international legal order and to foster closer links between academic, institutional, and policy communities working in this field.
The Organization's presence in New York also forms part of its broader efforts to support international legal cooperation and remain actively engaged with major developments within the United Nations system.
