Greek Focus Group – Community of Practice in Justice: “New technologies in justice: Implementations and challenges”

On the 25th of May 2023 the VR-DigiJust project organized its Greek Focus Group - Community of Practice in Justice entitled “New technologies in justice: Implementations and challenges”, at EPLO offices at the Roman Agora.

The action aimed at focusing on:

  • The level of participants’ knowledge in relation to new technologies in the Greek justice sector.
  • The educational needs and challenges of new technologies, Virtual Reality (Virtual Reality), Open-Source Intelligence data, (OSINT).

Together with the rest Focus Groups - Communities of Practice organised in Italy, Germany and France-Belgium, the overall aim of the Greek focus group is to create a Community of Practice in Greece, where the Greek judicial officials are able to interact with each other as well as with judicial officials from the participating countries, building bridges of collaboration and defining good practices & training strategies in the selection of cooperation instruments in relation to their specific competences. Thus, establishing a Regional VR-DigiJust Practitioners Network.

Judges and prosecutors from various regions of Greece attended the event, discussing among others upon topics of justice in the era of digitalisation, how new technologies are interfering in the justice systems, the Legal and ethical framework on Artificial Intelligence in the EU, practices and methods of digitalizing Justice and Training Professionals through Virtual Reality Technology. Last but not least, all participants had the opportunity to identify and indicate challenges and prospects upon the matter.

The VR-DigiJust project contributes to the effective and coherent application of specific EU cooperation instruments at regional level through a decentralized cross-border and cross-professional training strategy in the framework of Council Conclusions 6926/21 during the project lifecycle. It focuses on the impact of new technologies on the work of regional prosecutors and their staff, judges, lawyers and bailiffs when confronted with large cascade investigations.

The project is co-financed by the European Commission, Directorate-General for Justice and Consumers, under the coordination of the organization Agenfor International (Italy), with partners the European Public Law Organization (Greece), the Hochschule fur Offentliche Verwaltung (Germany), the Chambre Nationale des Commissaires de Justice (France), the Institut Europeen de l'expertise et de l'expert (France), the Chambre Nationale des Huissiers de Justice (Belgium), the Corte di Appello di Venezia (Italy), the Procura della Repubblica Presso il Tribunale di Firenze (Italy) & the Procura della Repubblica Presso il Tribunale di Rimini (Italy), bringing together a consortium with diverse expertise and networks with broad reach.
