PROJECT TITLE: THEMIS - Transformation of the Role of the Judiciary within a European Integrated Context
COUNTRIES: Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Greece
OVERALL OBJECTIVE: To create a substantial network between European countries, which already are EU members and those of future accession, in order to share experiences and information regarding the reform and reinforcement of the judicial system in each country towards a better implementation of the relevant acquis communautaire.
Specifically, the projects intended to raise awareness on the European enlargement process and the consequences of accession and to positively influence the European integration process, through the strong partnership of institutions of an EU Member State (Greece), a recent EU Member State (Slovakia), two acceding countries (Bulgaria and Romania), and a candidate one (Turkey).
ACTIVITIES:
The project targeted groups involved in the judicial system and more generally in the enlargement process of the EU. Special focus was placed on ensuring the correct enforcement of EU law in the judicial systems of the aspiring members in terms of proper incorporation as well as fairly implementing the law, through emphasizing fundamental respect for the rule of law.
The project included:
- The organization of a workshop in Istanbul with the participation of members of the judiciary from Turkey and Bulgaria and speakers from Greece Slovakia and Romania;
- The organization of a final conference in Athens at the premises of the European Public Law Center, with participant members of the judiciary from Turkey and Bulgaria, and some representatives from Romania;
- The publication and dissemination in the form of special brochures of the presentations and the information shared at the workshop and at the conference in a special volume of the EPLS series.
