Giuliano Amato, former Prime Minister of Italy and a well-known philhellene, will restate his belief that Greece must remain in eurozone in the framework of his visit to Athens on 12 and 13 September.

His recent statement in the newspaper of Rome "Il Messaggero" is characteristic of his stance: "if Greece exits the euro, the next could be us because the eurozone is like an artichoke. Sooner or later the leaves may be cut off". He emphasized his stance stating: "I was always utterly opposed to the idea favoring that the weaker should be first removed before the issues are set on the table. This course turns eurozone into the typical artichoke."

It is expected that he will express this belief during the meeting he is going to have in Athens with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dimitris Avramopoulos, the Minister of Education, Religion, Culture and Sports, Konstantinos Arvanitopoulos, and the Minister of Administrative Reform and Electronic Governance, Antonis Manitakis.

Giuliano Amato, representing the Italian Republic, will participate in the annual meeting of the Board of Directors of the European Public Law Organization (EPLO), to take place on Thursday, 13 September, in Sounion.
