Delegates from five countries of the Mediterranean region including Mr. Hisham Hassan A.Hamid from the Ministry of Interior of Egypt, Mr. Mohamed Mahmoud and Ms. Reeham Khalil from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, Mrs. Amina Selmane from the Ministry of Interior of Morocco, Mrs. Sajida Abuyousef from the Ministry of Interior/Palestinian National Authority of the Occupied Palestinian Territories, as well as Mr. Abdelkerim Chtourou from the Ministry of Social Affairs, Solidarity and Tunisians abroad of Tunisia made a study visit in Athens on 18-20 January in the framework of the EUROMED MIGRATION II project.
The EPLO, partner in the EUROMED MIGRATION II project, which is led by GTZ organized the study visit that consisted of meetings of the delegates with representatives of the National Coordinating Mechanism to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Human Beings of the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the International Organization for Migration, several NGOs including Klimaka, European Network of Women, The Smile of Child, Nea Zoi, as well as officers of the Hellenic Police.
The EUROMED MIGRATION II project aims at strengthening the Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in the management of migration, so as to build up the Mediterranean partner countries' capacity to provide an effective, targeted and comprehensive solution for various forms of migration, and includes activities such as the setting up of mechanisms to promote opportunities for legal migration, the support of measuresthat promote the linkage between migration and development and the stepping up of activities to stamp out people, trafficking and illegal immigration, as well as the management of mixed flows. The partner countries include the Peoples Republic of Algeria, the Arab Republic of Egypt, the State of Israel, the Kingdom of Jordan, the Lebanese Republic, the Kingdom of Morocco, the Palestinian Territories, the Syrian Arab Republic and the Republic of Tunisia.
The project is funded by the European Union and has duration of three years (2008-2011).
