Mr. Ronny Abraham, Judge of the International Court of Justice and member of the European Group of Public Law, and Dr. Marc Jaeger, President of the General Court of the European Union, paid tribute to Manuel Chrysoloras as keynote speakers, over the past two years, in the EPLO’s annual Lecture Series dedicated to the Greek pioneer in the introduction of Greek literature to Western Europe during the late Middle Ages.
Mr. Ronny Abraham gave a lecture on “The International Court of Justice and the Primacy of International Law” (“La Cour internationale de justice et la primauté du droit international”) as the guest speaker of the 8th Manuel Chrysoloras International Lecture on March 19, 2010.
Dr. Marc Jaeger was the main speaker of the 9th Manuel Chrysoloras International Lecture on October 21, 2011. Dr. Jaeger gave a lecture on the topic “The intensity of the Court’s control in competition cases that raise issues of complex financial assessment”. Dr. Irena Pelikánová, President of the 4th Chamber of the General Court of the European Union, spoke about “Public and Private law in the law of the European Union”, and Dr. Savvas Papasavvas, President of the 5th Chamber of the General Court of the European Union, discussed the topic of “Access to the file and transparency in competition law”.
The EPLO launched the International Lecture Series in 1999, honoring Manuel Chrysoloras (c. 1350-1415), the Greek scholar credited with spreading Greek literature in the West during the Middle Ages and today viewed as the symbol of the Hellenic contribution to the revival of European Culture. The lectures take place at the EPLO headquarters in Athens.
