Conference on "My Right for 2500 Years the Truth: Human Rights in Europe began in Gortyna”

The Region of Crete, the Municipality of Gortynos, the General Secretariat for Transparency and Human Rights of the Ministry of Justice and the EPLO organized a two-day scientific conference on the birth of human rights in Crete with the title “My Right for 2500 Years the Truth: Human Rights in Europe began in Gortyna” on 15 and 16 March 2014 in Heraklion and Gortyna of Crete respectively.

On the occasion of the Greek Presidency of the Council of European Union, this conference presented the opportunity to explore the birth of human rights in Europe, tracing it back to the first laws conceived in Gortyna and in ancient Greece in general.

The speakers included: Prof. Kelly Bourdara, University of Athens, Prof. Sofia Adam, Panteion University, Prof. Maria Gouni, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Prof. Ilias Arnaoutoglou, Research Center of the Academy of Athens, Prof. Dimitris Karambelas, University of London, and Prof. Stratis Papamanousakis, Institute of Cretan Law. The conference was presided
by Mr. Georgios Panagiotopoulos, President of the Council of State. The opening of the conference was by Mr. Georgios Sourlas, Secretary General of Ministry of Justice, Transparency and Human Rights.
