PROJECT TITLE: ALFA II DIKIA II: Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights of Citizens: the European and American Conventions on Human Rights

COUNTRIES: Chile, Colombia, Greece, Guatemala, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom

OVERALL OBJECTIVE: To reinforce the cooperation among partner institutions in the development of an in-depth dialogue on the theory and practice of Human Rights focusing on the European and American Conventions on Human Rights and their impact on the legislation and legal culture of European and Latin American countries.

ACTIVITIES:

The project encouraged the mobility of students, researchers and professors between the partner institutions in order to promote an advanced understanding of the European and American supra-national mechanisms for the protection of individual rights and freedoms. In addition to that, the project focused on the impact of the European and American Conventions on Human Rights on the legislation and legal culture of European and Latin American countries

Main activities included the hosting and training of students in the field of Constitutional / Public Law, through offering several research grants (duration up to six months each). The students were able to develop different approaches to establishing legitimate, just, effective and stable national responses to supra-national treaties on Human Rights. The grant-holders produced a research paper that was eventually published in one of the EPLC publication series. In order to provide opportunities for Human Rights professors to increase their familiarity with the plurality of Human Rights legal and social traditions, as well as different teaching techniques and syllabi, several lectures and conferences were delivered in the Universities of the two continents involved.
