The 25th EGPL Annual Reunion: “New Challenges of Democracy”

The 25th Annual Reunion of the European Group of Public Law (EGPL) was held on September 12 to 14, 2014.

During the Reunion, the reports of the conference organized by the EGPL on the subject “New Challenges of Democracy” were presented and discussed. Many participants, among which many academics, professors, government representatives, as well as old and new members coming from European and non-European countries, attended the yearly meeting of the European Group of Public Law.

During the first session of Friday 12, presided by Prof. H.-H. Trute, University of Hamburg (Germany), on the topic "Judicial and Political Power - Where is the Dividing Line?", general reports were delivered by Prof. M.P. Chiti, Università degli Studi di Firenze (Italy) and Prof. B. Mathieu, Conseil supérieur de la Magistrature (France).

During the second session, presided by Prof. J. Dutheil de la Rochère, ancien Présidente de l’Université Paris II (France), on the topic "Constitutional Imperatives - Transparency, Participation, Legal Certainty?", general reports were delivered by Prof. P. Jonason, Södertörn University (Sweden) and Prof. A. Sandulli, Università di Suor Orsola Benincasa (Italy), with an intervention by Dr. C. Ladenburger, European Commission. 

The third session, held on Saturday 13, presided by Mr. Costas Clerides, Attorney General (Republic of Cyprus), had "Does More Law Mean Less Democracy?" as main topic, followed by general reports delivered by Prof. M. Prata Roque, University of Lisbon (Portugal) and Prof. J. de Zwaan, Erasmus University Rotterdam (The Netherlands).

Finally, the fourth session, presided by Prof. L.M. Díez-Picazo, Judge at the Spanish Supreme Court, presented a case study drafted by Dr. Ch. Nikolaidis, King’s College (United Kingdom) and the general conclusions, delivered by The Rt. Hon. Lord Justice Laws, Lord Justice of Appeal (United Kingdom).
